The basics
IPTV Basics
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television: live TV channels and on-demand movies and series delivered over your internet connection instead of a cable or satellite signal. You watch through an app on a Smart TV, streaming stick, box, phone or computer, with a channel guide like cable. Our guide to getting IPTV in Canada explains how it works from plan to first channel.
IPTV differs from Netflix and other streaming apps because it carries live TV channels on a broadcast schedule, with a full channel guide, as well as a library of movies and series. Netflix-style apps only offer their own on-demand catalogue. With IPTV you switch between live news, sports and entertainment channels the way you would on cable, then pick a movie from the on-demand section.
An IPTV provider is the company that supplies the channels, the on-demand library and your login, usually as an M3U link or an Xtream Codes username, password and server URL. The provider runs the servers, and you add its details to a player app such as TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro. Its servers and support decide your experience, so test a provider such as our IPTV Canada service with a free trial before you pay.
IPTV works anywhere in Canada with a stable internet connection, from a downtown condo to a rural home or the cottage, because it streams over the internet rather than a local cable network. The same plan works in every province and territory, with support in English and French, and about 25 Mbps for each HD stream. For local tips, see our guides to IPTV in Toronto, IPTV in Montreal, IPTV in Vancouver and, in French, IPTV Québec.
Live TV on IPTV means channels playing on their broadcast schedule, which you browse in a channel guide, while VOD (video on demand) is a library of movies and series you start whenever you like. A Mode IPTV Standard plan includes 15,000+ live channels and 60,000+ movies and series; Premium includes 30,000+ live channels and 120,000+ movies and series.
The first step after subscribing to Mode IPTV is to open your welcome email, which holds your login: an M3U link or an Xtream Codes username, password and server URL. Then install a player app on your device and enter those details. Our IPTV setup guide has step-by-step instructions for every TV, stick, box, phone and computer.
Making the switch
IPTV vs Cable
IPTV is much cheaper than cable in Canada: cable TV typically costs $80 to $150 a month plus box rental, while IPTV runs about $10 to $25 a month on devices you already own. Our IPTV Canada plans start at $39.99 for 3 months and work out to about $5.83 a month on a 24-month Standard plan, with no contract and no auto-renewal.
Switching from cable to IPTV mainly means your TV now depends on your internet connection: if the internet goes down, so does the TV, and a weak connection shows up as buffering. You also set up the app yourself instead of waiting for a technician. In exchange you save on the bill and the box rental, as our guide to choosing the right IPTV service explains.
You can keep your current internet provider when you switch to IPTV, because IPTV runs over any home connection with enough speed: about 25 Mbps for each HD stream and 50 Mbps for each 4K stream. An IPTV free trial shows how your own connection handles it, and an unlimited data plan is the safer choice, since three hours a day of Full HD uses roughly 270 GB a month.
Most Canadian homes can use IPTV without buying new equipment, because a Smart TV from 2017 or later, a phone, a tablet or a computer runs the player apps. An older TV needs a streaming stick or an IPTV box plugged into its HDMI port. Our guide to IPTV boxes in Canada explains when a box is worth buying.
Plans and payment
Plans, Trial and Payment
The 24-month plan gives the lowest monthly price at Mode IPTV: Standard costs $139.99, about $5.83 a month, compared with $39.99 for 3 months, about $13.33 a month. The 12-month Standard plan works out to about $6.67 a month. Every IPTV subscription is prepaid once, in Canadian dollars, with no auto-renewal.
Your family can watch on different TVs at the same time when your Mode IPTV plan has enough connections: each screen playing at once uses one connection, and plans cover 1 to 5. You choose the number at checkout, and everyone uses the same login. Our guide to watching IPTV on multiple devices explains how connection limits work.
Mode IPTV accepts Visa and Mastercard credit cards as well as Interac e-Transfer, which is the most popular payment method with Canadian customers. Every plan is charged once, in Canadian dollars, for the full plan length. Nothing renews or charges your card again automatically; when the plan ends, you choose whether to renew.
Mode IPTV does not accept PayPal. You can pay by Interac e-Transfer, the most popular option with Canadian customers, or by Visa or Mastercard. Payment is a one-time charge in Canadian dollars for the plan length you choose, with no recurring billing behind it.
Mode IPTV activates most paid orders in about 10 minutes, and your login arrives by email: an M3U link or an Xtream Codes username, password and server URL. Activation is handled by our support team, which works 24/7 in English and French, so you can install your player app while you wait and be watching shortly after paying.
Anyone in Canada can get the Mode IPTV 24-hour free trial, once per household, with no credit card. The trial runs on the same servers and channels as paid plans and is usually activated in about 10 minutes. Request your IPTV free trial and test it at peak hours, 7 to 11 PM, on the TV you will actually use.
The Premium plan does not need a 4K TV: it plays on any TV, phone or computer, and the picture simply matches what your screen can show. You get the 4K channels at full quality on a 4K TV with a 4K-capable device and about 50 Mbps for each 4K stream. Premium also has twice the live channels of Standard: 30,000+ instead of 15,000+.
Your account
Account and Renewal
When a Mode IPTV plan expires, the channels stop loading in your app, and nothing renews or charges you automatically. To continue, place a new order and answer "Renewing" when checkout asks whether you are a new or renewing customer; your existing line is extended, so nothing needs reinstalling. Our IPTV renewal guide walks through each step.
If you lose your Mode IPTV login, look first for the welcome email, which holds your M3U link or Xtream Codes username, password and server URL. If you can't find it, contact support on WhatsApp or the live chat with the name and email used on your order, and the team can send your details again, usually in a few minutes.
You can change your IPTV URL or server by adding the new details in your player app as a new playlist or portal, checking the channels load, then deleting the old entry. On TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro that means a new playlist; on a Formuler or MAG box you edit the portal URL. Our guide to changing the URL on an IPTV box shows each app.
You can move your IPTV service to a new device at any time: install a player app on it and enter the same login from your welcome email. Only the number of screens playing at once is limited by your plan's connections. Boxes that log in by MAC address, such as MAG, need support to update the address, which takes a few minutes on WhatsApp or the live chat.
The Mode IPTV 7-day refund covers every paid plan when the service doesn't work properly on your setup and support can't fix it. The 7 days start when your login is delivered. Contact support with your order name and email, the problem and your device; the team troubleshoots first and, if it can't be resolved, approves the refund the same day. Details are in our refund policy.
You can become a Mode IPTV reseller through our IPTV reseller program: resellers buy credits at wholesale prices, create customer lines in their own panel and sell them at their own price, while handling sales and first-line support. No technical background is needed to start. Our guide on how to become an IPTV reseller covers margins, setup and the rules in Canada.
Channels and content
Channels and On-Demand
You can watch local Canadian news on IPTV: Mode IPTV includes Canadian channels from every province, with national news and local stations in English and French. Lineups change as suppliers add and upgrade streams, so the free trial is the best way to check the exact channels for your city. The full channel list shows what each plan covers by category.
IPTV includes movies and series on demand alongside the live channels: our IPTV Canada service has 60,000+ titles on Standard and 120,000+ on Premium, including new releases. You start any title whenever you like from the Movies or Series section of your player app, separate from the live channels and at no extra charge.
Catch-up lets you replay shows from the past few days straight from the channel guide, without recording anything. Mode IPTV offers 7-day catch-up on major networks, and how far back it goes depends on the channel. Catch-up relies on the TV guide data, so it works in apps that read the EPG, such as TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro.
You can record a show to watch later with a player app that records, such as TiviMate on Android TV or Fire TV, plus free storage on the device or a USB drive. Recording is a TiviMate Premium feature, and a recording in progress can use one of your plan's connections. Our guide to recording live TV with IPTV covers scheduling and storage.
Mode IPTV includes kids and family channels in English and French, and most player apps let you lock adult categories behind a PIN. The default parental PIN is usually 0000, sometimes 1234, and you should replace it with your own right away. Our guide to the IPTV parental control password lists the default for each app and box.
IPTV channels are available in 4K for sports and movies on the Premium IPTV subscription, which streams in up to 4K, while the Standard plan streams in HD and Full HD. Watching in 4K needs a 4K TV, a 4K-capable device such as a 4K streaming stick, and about 50 Mbps for each 4K stream, ideally on a wired connection.
Game night
Live Sports on IPTV
You can watch live sports on IPTV: Mode IPTV includes sports channels in Full HD and 4K covering hockey, football, soccer, cricket and combat sports, with PPV events included at no extra cost. For game nights, plan on at least 25 Mbps for each stream. Our IPTV sports streaming guide covers the setup.
Watching two games at once needs two connections on your IPTV subscription, one for each screen, such as the living-room TV and a tablet. Mode IPTV plans cover 1 to 5 connections, chosen at checkout. Your internet also has to carry both streams: about 50 Mbps for two HD games, or 100 Mbps for two in 4K.
To avoid buffering during big games, connect the TV or streaming device by Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, keep at least 25 Mbps free for each HD stream, and pause large downloads elsewhere in the house. Evenings from 7 to 11 PM are the busiest time on every network, which is where the best IPTV in Canada stands out, so test a game night during your free trial before you pay.
Devices and apps
IPTV Devices and Apps
The best device for IPTV in most homes is an Android TV or Google TV streaming device, or a Fire TV Stick on Fire OS, because they run TiviMate and most other player apps smoothly. A recent Samsung or LG Smart TV also works without extra hardware, and a dedicated box helps on an older TV or where you want a wired connection. Our Android TV guide covers the most popular setup.
Samsung and LG Smart TVs from 2017 onward work with IPTV through apps from their own stores: Smarters Pro, Ib Player Pro and Smart IPTV on Samsung, and Smarters Pro Original and Smart IPTV on LG. Smart TVs running Android TV or Google TV, such as Sony and TCL models, can also run TiviMate. Our guide to installing IPTV on a Samsung TV shows each app step by step.
The best IPTV app depends on your device: TiviMate is the top choice on Android TV and Fire TV, IPTV Smarters Pro works on most devices including iPhone, Samsung and LG, and GSE Smart IPTV is a paid option for Apple devices. All of them accept an M3U link or an Xtream Codes login. Our list of the best free IPTV apps compares them by device.
You can watch IPTV on your phone with a player app: IPTV Smarters Pro, GSE Smart IPTV or IPTVX on iPhone, and IPTV Smarters Pro on Android phones. Enter the same login you use on your TV; each phone playing at once uses one connection. On mobile data, SD quality uses about a third of the data of HD. Our guide to IPTV on iPhone and iPad covers each app.
IPTV works on most Fire TV Sticks: unlock Developer Options, add the free Downloader app from the Amazon Appstore, and use it to install TiviMate with the code 272483; Kodi is a free alternative installed the same way. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select and newer sticks run Vega OS, which only installs Appstore apps, so check your model first. Our Fire Stick guide shows every step.
You can watch IPTV on a Mac or PC with a free player: MyIPTV Player from the Microsoft Store on Windows, and VLC or Kodi on both Windows and Mac. Paste the M3U link from your welcome email and your channels load within minutes, and Kodi also shows the TV guide. Our guide to watching IPTV on a Windows PC covers each player.
An M3U link is a single web address that loads your whole channel playlist, while an Xtream Codes login is a server URL, username and password that the app uses to fetch channels, movies, series and the TV guide as separate sections. Xtream usually gives a richer library that updates faster, and M3U works in more apps. Our guide on where to get a URL for IPTV explains both.
Internet and quality
Internet and Picture Quality
IPTV can go over a capped internet plan, because one hour uses about 1.5 to 3 GB in HD and 7 GB or more in 4K. Three hours a day of Full HD on one TV comes to roughly 270 GB a month, and each extra screen adds its own usage. An unlimited home plan avoids overage fees, and on mobile data SD quality uses the least.
A wired Ethernet connection is better for IPTV than Wi-Fi, because it stays steady when the network is busy, which matters most for 4K and live sports. Wi-Fi works well on the 5 GHz band with the device close to the router. Plan on about 25 Mbps for each HD stream and 50 Mbps for each 4K stream. Our internet speed guide covers both.
A VPN helps with IPTV in three situations: when your internet provider slows streaming traffic, when you watch on public or hotel Wi-Fi, and when you want your viewing kept private from your ISP. At home without throttling, you don't need one. To check, compare a channel with and without the VPN at peak hours. Our guide on using a VPN for IPTV shows the setup.
Canadian internet providers can block IPTV services: Bell, Rogers, Telus and TekSavvy must block a named list of unlicensed services under a Federal Court order, using DNS filtering, IP blocking and traffic inspection. Services that hold the rights to what they stream are not on that list. Our article on whether ISPs can block IPTV in Canada explains the 2026 order.
Picture quality drops in the evening because 7 to 11 PM is the busiest time on every network: your street, your household and the servers are all at peak load, so a plan sold as 100 Mbps can deliver far less. A wired connection, fewer devices streaming at once and a provider with spare server capacity keep evenings smooth, and an IPTV free trial taken at 9 PM shows the difference.
Quick fixes
IPTV Troubleshooting
To tell whether IPTV is down or the problem is your setup, try a few channels on a second device and a second connection, such as a phone on mobile data. If they fail everywhere, the service is likely down, so ask support about an outage; if only one device or some channels fail, the cause is your network, app or playlist. Our guide Is IPTV down today? lists the fixes.
A slow or glitchy IPTV app usually needs its cache cleared first: the cache holds temporary files that pile up or get damaged, and clearing it removes only those files, not your login or settings. You find the option in the app's own settings, or in the device's app settings on Android TV and Fire TV. Restart the app afterwards, then the device if the problem stays.
A TV guide that doesn't match what's playing is almost always caused by a wrong time zone, channel IDs that don't match the guide data, or old guide data stuck in the app. Set the device clock to update automatically, refresh the EPG in your app, and use the app's time-shift option if times are off by a set number of hours. Our EPG guide covers each fix.
Restart your IPTV box when clearing the app cache hasn't fixed freezing or slow menus: a restart, or soft reset, fixes most remaining problems in a minute. Factory reset only as a last resort, because it erases your apps and settings and you will need to add your login again. Our guide to resetting an IPTV box has the steps for MAG, Android TV, Fire Stick and TVIP.
To change the audio language or subtitles, press OK (or tap the screen) while a channel or movie plays, open the player's settings and choose an audio or subtitle track; select Off to hide subtitles. In IPTV Smarters Pro, unticking Active Subtitle in Settings, then General Settings, stops subtitles turning on by themselves. Our guide to turning off subtitles covers stubborn cases.
An "invalid login" error on IPTV usually means one character of the server URL, username or password is wrong: a typo, a wrong capital letter, a missing port or a space at the end of the link. Copy the details from your welcome email instead of typing them, and check that your plan is still active. Our Smarters login guide shows where each detail goes.
Legality and safety
Legality and Safety
An IPTV service is illegal in Canada when it streams channels or films without holding the rights to them; the technology itself is as legal as cable. Unlicensed services often promise every channel for a few dollars, lifetime access or anonymous payment, and Canadian ISPs are under court order to block a named list of them, so choose an IPTV provider that is open about who it is. Our article Is IPTV legal in Canada? explains the law.
A fake IPTV provider usually shows the same warning signs: "lifetime" deals, sales through social media groups or messaging bots, no business information, no free trial and untraceable payment methods. A real provider publishes its prices, support channels and refund policy, and lets you test the service first. Our guide to finding reliable IPTV providers covers where to look.
